PI Approval and how to obtain it for submissions using eRIA.
If you are the PI you would simply choose the answer “I am the PI and have read the above and agree to serve as the PI with the above obligations”. When you choose this answer, Lock the form using the Locked checkbox, and click the Submit button in the submission package window, this submission will be routed directly to the IRB for review.
If you are not the PI and the PI is willing to review submissions using eRIA, you would answer “I am not the PI”. After you answer, another question will appear asking how you want to obtain PI Approval. You would answer “Advance this submission to the PI”.
You should then Lock the form using the Locked checkbox and that will take you to the submission package window. When you click Submit, the submission will be sent to the PI via eRIA, the PI will receive an email indicating their action is required and this submission will appear in the Things to Do area of the home screen when the PI logs into eRIA. (If the PI clicks on the link in the email that is sent, it will take them directly to the Task Assignment window and they will not see Things to Do.)
If you are not the PI and the PI wants to review your submission outside of eRIA, you would answer “I am not the PI”. After you answer, another question will appear asking how you want to obtain PI Approval. You would answer “Attach the signed PI approval and advance this submission to either the IRB or IACUC”.
After you answer the second question, a pop up appears that allows you to print a PI Approval form. Please see image below. The pop up is circled in red.
Please note: This image is the one visible on an Application, you will see something that looks slightly different on a Modification form or a Continuing Review form.
You should print out the PI Approval form and a PDF copy of your submission for your PI, ask the PI to review the PDF copy of the submission and sign the PI Approval form. Then you upload the signed PI Approval form to eRIA. (Pictures of the form taken with a cell phone are acceptable.)
To upload, the researcher would locate and click the upload button, image below…..
….to upload the signed PI Approval form.
You should then Lock the form using the Locked checkbox and that will take you to the submission package window. When you click Submit, the submission will be sent directly to the IRB or IACUC for review.

eRIA is the Princeton University name for the suite of electronic management systems (EMS) supporting Research Integrity and Assurance (RIA), hence eRIA, and implemented to help reduce investigator burden.
The first of these systems, eRIA-IRB, launched in July 2017, supports the IRB, the second, eRIA-IACUC (launching August 2020) will include support for the IACUC, and finally, the Biosafety committee module (eRIA-IBC) will launch early in 2021.
eRIA is based on software developed by InfoEd GlobalTM and has been configured to meet the needs of Princeton University. The application provides electronic forms, customizable workflows and reporting features, and stores data in a secure database hosted onsite at the University. The InfoEd suite is used at many top academic institutions to manage their research administration needs.

eRIA provides a single, integrated, collaborative system that contains all elements needed for protocol submissions through approval and monitoring.
In the eRIA system, RESEARCHERS complete and send their protocol applications to their PIs, receive feedback comments, modify their protocol applications and re-send to PIs for IACUC or IRB submission.
- Principal Investigators (PI) are the communications conduit between researchers and the IRB and IACUC and will maintain the legal responsibilities associated with the designation of PI. PIs submit their study applications in eRIA, review and submit student/researcher applications, and respond to IACUC and IRB decisions throughout the review cycle
- eRIA prompts IACUC and IRB Administrators to perform several reviews throughout the process. In eRIA they can add comments and additional reviewers, send the application back to the PI if necessary, and determine whether to approve a submission or send it on for full board review. They prepare full board meeting agendas, upload meeting notes, and send them out to Board Members using eRIA. IACUC and IRB Administrators are the communications hub between PIs and Board Members.
- In eRIA, Board Members review full board protocol applications in preparation for board meetings, read and add comments, make determinations/suggestions, receive full board meeting agendas and have access to meeting minutes after the meetings.
