Preparing for the AAALAC Site Visit

Successful re-accreditation requires all members of Princeton University’s Animal Care and Use Program (ACUP) to participate in the process. 
Specifically:
  1. Attend meetings & engage with IACUC, RIA, LAR/PRR, & EHS​
    • September Review & Planning Meetings
    • Attend one of these short, in-person meetings:
      1. Thursday September 26th, 2:00 – 2:30pm (PNI Rm 101)
      2. Tuesday October 1st, 2:30 - 3:00 PM (PSH Rm 125)
    • Fall 2024 Semiannual Inspections
      1. Updated Self-assessment Tool (September)
      2. Lab & vivarium visits (October)
      3. Post-inspection communication (October/November)
    • RIA/LAR outreach to labs in November/December
      1. AAALAC Preparation Checklist for Labs 
      2. AAALAC Lab Spokesperson Form
      3. Final Lab Walkthroughs (based on site visit dates)
  2. Communication​
    • RIA, LAR, PRR, EHS will disseminate information​
    • Please read, review, ask questions​
  3. Know the IACUC protocol(s) and processes
    • Ensure compliance with your IACUC approved protocol(s)
    • Utilize the AAALAC Preparation Checklist for Labs tool
    • Ensure familiarity with lab SOPs related to IACUC protocols and policies
    • Ensure compliance with all safety and occupational health requirements and processes (BSL2 practices, PPE, proper attire, medical clearance) 
    • Ensure compliance with IACUC, LAR, PRR, EHS policies, guidelines, and SOPs related to the procedures and animal activities you perform (e.g., single housing stickers, biohazard labeling)
  4. Evaluate and Update​
    • Ensure records and logs (e.g., surgical, water restriction, tumor monitoring) are available, up-to-date, accurate, and legible​
    • Ensure all drugs, substances, and materials are in-date (not expired)​
    • Clean up animal use and housing spaces ​
    • Review methods for contact veterinary services and reporting animal welfare concerns
